Teething and Your Toddler: Tips to Make it Pain-Free

By | May 6, 2009

The occurrence of teething in toddlers varies from one another. In some toddlers teething begins when they are three months old, but in others there might not be any sign of teething till their tenth month. Very rarely, babies are also born with tooth, but then they can be problematic during breastfeeding. Normally, toddlers might get nearly eight teeth when they become one year old but this too varies from one child to another. For some the teething process is very smooth and for others it might be problematic. The parents can know about their child’s teething start when they see the tooth partially erupting via their gums.

Teething in babies could be a very painful experience as the gums become swollen and reddened since the tooth puts pressure on them. This could lead to discomfort in drinking or eating or sucking that the toddlers or babies might feed in a very inconsistent manner. Other teething signs include heavy dribbling and flushed cheeks. Babies during teething problems might feel irritated and hence cry and do not sleep well.

During teething babies might also have an urge to chew any object they get in touch with like toys, carrots and even might chew their own fingers. But fortunately, this urge can be converted to their advantage and get them relieved from pain. Babies above the age of six months can be given food stuffs such as celery and carrot sticks which are chilled and soft as they both fulfill the urge to chew and make the painful gums numb. But care should be taken not to give anything hard.
