Pink Toddler Eye Condition – Treatment Methods

Children are always susceptible to various kinds of diseases and therefore, a lot of care and protection has to be taken when it comes to children, especially the toddlers. One of the diseases that commonly affect the toddler is the pink eye, which is a condition in which the white part of the eye and the inner eyelids become red and causes itching, swelling, irritation and eye discharge. Scientifically known as conjunctivitis, toddlers affected with pink eye are called pink toddlers.

Though the reasons may differ from one toddler to another for getting affected by pink eye, basically, bacterial infection of the eye or viral infection, eye allergy and dust and smoke may be one of the reasons for pink eye condition. Generally, both the eyes of the toddler are affected by pink eye and the duration for which the eye is affected is only for about twenty four hours, if proper treatment for the eye is taken.

In some extreme cases of conjunctivitis, it may be contagious and it is essential to consult an eye doctor to check whether it is contagious. If it is not, it can be cured within a day. For pink eye condition in toddlers, it is sufficient to apply antibiotics such as topical drops or ointments, provided, the pink eye is due to bacterial or viral infection. If the pink eye is because of allergy, there are many allergic medications such as alocril, atonal and so on that rapidly helps to recover.

If certain cautious steps are taken, pink eye condition can be reduced for the least suffering. Whenever there is any eye discharge, it should be wiped immediately, with a warm and moist cloth. This would help the toddler to overcome the irritation. In case of the pink eye being contagious, it should be ensured that the hands are washed after touching the eye for clearing of discharge.

The toddler should be discouraged from rubbing the infected eye frequently, which it may do involuntarily. The other aspects that have to be taken care are, the toddler should be given a good balanced and healthy diet and the toddler’s eye should be regularly checked by the eye doctor or pediatrician. If possible, the toddler should not be exposed to the sun and if is utterly necessary to go out in the sun, it is better to protect the eye with special protective lenses. Crawling by the toddler should be encouraged, as it would help to master coordinate the eyes and the movement of hands. Good eye practices are essential, right from the tender age, to ensure that the toddler grows up with healthy eyes. It is the duty of the parent to imbibe such habits at the early age.
