A child that is one year old and weighing at least twenty pounds can ride in a toddler car seat. Though the situation differs from one toddler to another, basically, there are five different kinds of car seat for toddlers.

Convertible car sets are the ones that can be used rear facing or forward facing. There are forward facing car seats that can be specifically used only for forward facing with a harness and some are suitable only for toddlers that are up to forty pounds. There is a combination of forward facing and booster car seats that can be used without a harness for toddlers, weighing from eighty to hundred pounds. Some of the vehicles may be designed only for forward facing car seats and before purchasing, this has to be looked into.

Of late, there is a new model called travel vests which are a safe alternative to forward facing toddler car seats. This is very useful while moving from one vehicle to another and there is no need to take the car seat in and out. Travel vests are more useful for toddlers who are little older and who simply refuse to stay in the car seat. Travel vests are capable of holding toddlers right from twenty pounds to 160 pounds of weight.

After the selection of the right type of toddler car seat is over, there are certain points to take care of. Firstly, the harness straps should not be too loose or in the wrong position and the harness chest clip should also be in the right position. The toddler car seats must also be appropriate with the age of the toddler.

Toddlers that are one year old and less than twenty pounds are safer in a rear facing car seat. It is advisable to use the toddler car seat until the child is over forty pounds and be placed in a belt positioning booster seat and it should be used until the child is eight years old. The harness must be used until the toddler is at least eighty pounds of weight.

The lap portion of the car seat should lie across the toddler’s hip and not across their belly. The shoulder part should be across their shoulder and not rubbing their neck. Generally, children that are twelve years or younger would be safer to stay in the back of the car, if possible.

The angle of the toddler car seats is required to be at a 45 degree angle level and it should not be forgotten that the rear facing infant seat should not be in front of an airbag. Also, it is advisable to avoid buying used car seats and it should be devoid of any cracks and missing parts. The instructions must be read carefully before installing a toddler car seat.
